About the Position
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of patrol and community policing duties involving the prevention of crime, the protection of life and property and the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; makes arrests and transports suspects into custodyl assists in processing crime scenes and preserving evidence; assists in the preparation of cases and testifies in court; and performs related work as required.
Supervision Recevied and Exercised:
Receives general supervision from an assigned Police Sergeant or management personnel. Exercises no supervision of staff.
This is a sworn journey-level law enforcement class that performs all assignments found in a municiple police department. While incumbents are normally assigned to a specific geographic area for patrol, all functional areas of the law enforcement field, including investigations, youth services, administration and training are included. Incumbents may be armed and may be assigned to work in uniform or plain clothes.
Example of Duties:
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions to make reasonable accomodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
- Patrol the parks in an assigned vehicle or on foot, to protect life and property, report suspicious, criminal activity, or hazardous conditions and deter crime.
- Respond to emergency calls for service, distrubances, thefts, burglaries, suspicious activies and other incidents to protect public safety and property. Investigate crimes agianst persons and property; interview victims and witnesses, search for, evaluate and secure property.
- Make arrests and serve warrants occasionally; take individuals into custody and transport them to booking facilities.
- Assist county legal staff in preparing, documenting, and developing cases and gathering information; testify in court as required.
- Prepare and maintain repots, logs, records and accurate files.
- Oversee the use and care of equipment as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Answer questions and provide informaiton to the public as appropriate.
Knowledge of and Ability to:
- Perform a wide range of law enforcement assignements and modern law enforcement methods and procedures; including patrol, crime prevention and investigation.
- Mandated and department standard operating procedures.
- Rules of evidence regarding search and seizure and the preservation of evidence.
- Community demographics including cultural, social and economic factors.
- Geographic locations wihtin assigned patrol area.

- Meet established standards of physical endurance, agility, health and vision.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from high school or satisfactory completion of an acceptable General Education Development (GED) test.
- College or University completion is desirable.
- Possession of valid California Drivers License.
- Possession of a current California P.O.S.T. (Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission) Academy Graduation Certificate, Basic Certificate, or Basic Course Waiver by date of appointment.
